The Puppies Are Safe.
The landslide on August 25th scarred Ketchikan Alaska forever. https://northstarstudio.net/landslide/ One city worker lost his life. Another remains in the hospital. Several families lost their homes and many others are displaced. And the entire town is rattled beyond words. But Alani and Cassie, the absolutely precious puppies of Bill and James Montiver, have emerged from the rubble a week later. The puppies are survivors.
We All Needed a Little Miracle.
We got two.
Ketchikan has been traumatized. Every time it starts raining, people worry. Every time there are sirens you can go to Facebook and someone is already asking what the sirens are for and often someone has already answered. The lights went out the other day and everyone sat on edge until the cause of the outage was known. We remained stuck in the feeling of waiting for bad things to happen. But the puppies’ rescue symbolize hope. It’s almost as if the puppies being found signals the beginning of healing for our devastated town.
Happy and Healthy
Cassie and Alani are remarkably healthy and happy. My husband and I went to visit them the evening of their rescue. They were loving and playful. It may have helped that my husband had a pocket full of duck jerky treats in his pocket. They love their duck treats. They each lost two pounds during the ordeal. Thankfully, they had been well loved and, perhaps, a little spoiled before the accident, and had the extra ounces to lose. It may well have been all the extra treats that kept them from starving. They have a little weight to gain back, but that seems to be the extent of the toll the week of being trapped in the debris has taken. And it is truly wonderful to see the Montiver family reunited.
